After graduating from Carroll College with a B.A. in Business Administration and an A.A. in Computer Science, he served in the U.S. Army and earned an M.S. in General Administration from Central Michigan University.

Phillips is board certified through as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Physical Security Professional (PSP), and Certified Infrastructure Preparedness Specialist (CIPS). His professional memberships include ASIS International, Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Phillips has worked as a security professional for the City of Seattle, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and he currently serves as the Physical Security Manager for Humana's Global Security Department.
